The 41-year-old once had the footballing world at his feet after bursting onto the scene with Ipswich Town after a lucrative move from Blackburn Rovers.

At the age of just 22, he remembers having more than £300,000 in his bank account having come from a council estate in Shepherd’s Bush.

But his 16-year career never quite managed to hit the heights it promised and, despite scoring 40 goals in 214 Premier League games, he encountered several off-field problems.

After spells with Everton, Wigan and Charlton among other clubs, Bent revealed his issues all came to a head one night in September 2015.
