This Blogger Just Revealed Something Shocking About The Kylie Lip Kit Formula
Kylie Jenner has been raking in the cash ever since she launched her first Kylie Jenner Lip Kit colors. Since then, she's added multiple matte shades, three glosses, and three metallic colors. And because Jenner's restocking her Matte Lip Kits today, there's something one beauty blogger thinks you should know about the new formula in the Kylie Lip Kits (before you spend your money on them).
Beauty blogger Stephanie Nicole posted an extremely detailed YouTube video that breaks down the formula of the new Kylie Lip Kit shade Candy K, and it's not all good news. "The ingredients [in the new Candy K] are different, so we're going to see if it's better or worse," she says in the video. Stephanie explains that she purchased her first Candy K lipstick during the initial round of manufacturing when the Lip Kits were just announced. She then purchased another last April, after Jenner had changed the formula. While she was fairly impressed with the first formula of Candy K, she continues that aside from the same "butterscotch" smell, everything else about the new formulation is different. "I do feel like the formula is much thinner," says Stephanie. "The first formula is mousse-y and creamy, and the second one is significantly more watery." Perhaps the most striking difference is that the two Candy K lipsticks are totally different colors. The original shade is a nude pink, while the new Candy K color goes on as more of a bright purple-pink.
A significant shade change would be enough to bother most lipstick fans, but Stephanie dug deeper, investigating the ingredients in the new Candy K formula. In the process, she discovered that the new formula has the exact same ingredients as ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick.
"The ingredients from this Candy K and the ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick are identical," says Stephanie. "The ColourPop one does have a few other ingredients in there, which are filler products, but every single thing that's in these Kylie Jenner lipsticks are in the ColourPop ones." And because Jenner's shipping rates are so high, Stephanie breaks down how much more people are spending by purchasing a Lip Kit versus ColourPop: Shelling out for a Lip Kits costs about $23 more than purchasing a ColourPop lip liner and lipstick.
Stephanie also goes on to explain the annoying reason why ColourPop is able to sell the same product for much less, and where she thinks that extra money is going when you buy Jenner's lipsticks. "The company has to pay Kylie Jenner because her name is on it. The extra money is not going for product development or better ingredients," says Stephanie. "All she is doing is basically lending her name out to a brand that knows that no matter what it is, people will wait in line for this. So when they saw the huge response, they cut some corners, and took a good formula and made it cheap."

In all fairness, Stephanie does say that the new formula holds up throughout an entire day (even after she ate a quesadilla), but she would still choose ColourPop's liquid lipsticks because of the lower price and the way they feel on her lips (ColourPop's ingredients are in slightly different proportions than Jenner's, changing the wear of the lipstick a bit). "I always want to feel like women are empowered and smart, and Kylie is drop-dead gorgeous, but do not give me the same exact ingredients [as the Colourpop lipsticks] and mark it up," says Stephanie. "I feel like I'm telling little kids that Santa doesn't exist. I'm just trying to show you guys how frivolous it is to spend your money on the exact same thing you could get elsewhere cheaper."
This isn't the first time Jenner has been called out for the quality of her products. A few weeks ago Jeffree Star ranted about the quality of the wands on the Kylie Glosses, and Jenner has been reformulating her lipsticks since they launched, addressing issues as well as the needs of her consumers. Running a business is hard, and everyone is bound to make mistakes, so it's not unexpected for a young businesswoman like Jenner to be encountering these issues, but as Stephanie points out in her video, that doesn't exempt her from critique. Though Stephanie says that she would still rank the Lip Kits high on her list of best liquid lipsticks because they last so long, she also emphasizes that "the moment an 18-year-old takes $40 from me for a product, that gives me the right to critique it and review it." No arguments there.
