Hinsdale D86 Keeps Law Firm Proposals Secret
HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale High School District 86 is keeping under wraps the proposals from the nine firms interested in providing legal services.
In response to Patch’s public records request, the district on Thursday cited two exceptions to the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
One of the exceptions is for commercial information obtained from a business where the firm asserts the information is proprietary or confidential.

The other one is for proposals and bids for contracts, including information that would frustrate procurement if it were disclosed. This exception applies until a public body chooses a firm.

The district’s denial includes all information in the proposals, including firms’ prices, offerings and experience.

On Friday, Patch filed a follow-up request for a document showing the names of the nine firms that submitted proposals. Patch also asked the district’s spokesman for the names without undergoing a formal records request process.
Last week, District 86 officials said they would select three finalists and have them present at a special school board meeting Nov. 12.
The district is seeking a law firm to replace Robbins Schwartz. The firm terminated its relationship in September, saying the district was “unreasonably difficult” to serve.
After hiring Robbins Schwartz in January, the district’s legal bills skyrocketed, exceeding those in much larger districts.
Last week, the school board voted against paying Robbins Schwartz’s $132,000 bill from August.
