Super Rugby Pacific: Hurricanes flyer Julian Savea set for milestone match against the Brumbies

Former All Blacks flyer Julian Savea is set to make his 150th appearance for the Hurricanes when they face the Brumbies in their Super Rugby Pacific encounter in Wellington on Friday.

The 32-year-old has been named on the right wing in an unchanged backline for the clash with the men from Canberra.

Joins an exclusive club

He joins an exclusive club at the Hurricanes as he ties the record of experienced scrum-half TJ Perenara in playing 150 matches for the 2016 Super Rugby champions.

Savea made his debut for the Hurricanes in 2011 but left the Wellington-based outfit in 2018 to join Top 14 heavyweights Toulon.

He spent two seasons at the French club but returned to the Hurricanes in 2020 and is excited to play in his 150th match for the club.

“It’s really special for me to get 150,” he told Newshub. “To play one game is awesome, I remember when I started, it was a dream come true.

“I’m not sure if you remember the backline, but I was taken aback by the star power we had in 2011. To finally get here, and come back from France and get to a milestone like this is pretty special.”

Meanwhile, Hurricanes head coach Jason Holland has made just one change to his run-on side which lost to the Chiefs at home in round eight with Isaia Walker-Leawere replacing Dominic Bird at lock.

Walker-Leawere joins James Blackwell in the second-row while Wellington lock Caleb Delany will offer cover from the replacements bench.

Asafo Aumua continues at hooker

Elsewhere, Asafo Aumua will continue as the starting hooker, and with Dane Coles unavailable for selection, Jacob Devery could make his first appearance of the season off the bench.

In the backline, Peter Umaga-Jensen will partner Jordie Barrett in the centres while Aidan Morgan and Cam Roigard continue as the starting half-backs.

Hurricanes: 15 Josh Moorby, 14 Julian Savea, 13 Peter Umaga-Jensen, 12 Jordie Barrett, 11 Salesi Rayasi, 10 Aidan Morgan, 9 Cam Roigard, 8 Ardie Savea (c), 7 Du’Plessis Kirifi, 6 Devan Flanders, 5 Isaia Walker-Leawere, 4 James Blackwell, 3 Tyrel Lomax, 2 Asafo Aumua, 1 Xavier Numia
