Portillo's Is Coming To Plainfield: 'A Historic Wrong, Righted'

PLAINFIELD, IL — Portillo’s is coming to Plainfield, Mayor John Argoudelis announced Wednesday.

The beloved restaurant for hot dogs, beef and burgers will open a drive-thru-style outpost — rather than a full-size sit-down eatery — in the old PNC Bank building at the intersection of 135th Street and Route 59.

“There’s still some finalization needed to make it a reality,” Argoudelis told Patch. “We’re working hard to complete this and have it here.”

Wednesday morning on Facebook, Argoudelis posted a picture of Portillo’s famous chocolate cake with the caption, “A historic wrong – righted.” What he’s referring to was how before 2008, the Portillo’s in Shorewood was originally supposed to open in Plainfield.

“For several reasons, depending on which theory you want to choose, it ended up in Shorewood,” he said.

But soon, Plainfield residents won’t have to drive south to enjoy a slice of cake or a chili cheese dog. Argoudelis posited that plans to be finalized by the end of summer and said the restaurant could be open as soon as the end of the year, depending on how quickly construction goes.

“People in Plainfield should take credit for these businesses wanting to come to Plainfield,” he said. “Everybody in the community — the government and the individual residents that support these businesses — make Plainfield an attractive place.”
